Research & Discovery

Background: Tarot card reading is a highly personal and individualized practice that can be used for self-reflection, personal growth, and even therapeutic purposes. Currently, the tarot is experiencing a resurgence in popularity, driven by a growing interest in alternative spiritual practices, the influence of social media, and the appeal of tarot imagery in mainstream culture.

But interpreting tarot cards is difficult and few people are willing to spend the time to acquire the knowledge needed to interpret tarot. That’s where Nudge Tarot comes in. Nudge Tarot interprets the user’s tarot cards for them and they can use their own physical tarot cards. No cards, no problem, use Nudge Tarot’s digital card experience.

Goal: Nudge Tarot leverages a powerful AI backend to serve customers deep and rich interpretations of their daily tarot with regard to general guidance, finance, and love. Nudge Tarot is easy to share with others as well so you can do readings for friends and send them their own readings.

My Role: I played a crucial role in shaping the initial concept, conducting user research, and designing the user experience.

Concept Development

Customer Problem: The challenge lies in learning to interpret tarot cards, leading many to seek online sites for generic interpretations. Nudge Tarot aims to offer personalized interpretations and enhance tarot experiences.

Proposed Solution: This platform interprets cards dynamically, providing fresh and unique insights. It allows users to interact with their physical cards or use digital cards for readings.

Target Market: Individuals interested in tarot, including middle-aged adults, younger generations, and seniors, with a focus on women, non-binary, and those seeking self-reflection.

Competition: Competitors mainly offer professional readings, while Nudge Tarot stands out with its free, personalized, and longitudinal tracking features for deeper insights.

Experience Goals: Promote daily use, sharing with friends, and encourage ownership of physical decks. The platform aims to gamify learning and provide value even without owning tarot cards.

Scenarios: The development roadmap includes various scenarios from individual card pulls to group readings, emphasizing user engagement and interaction.

Scenarios

User: Susan was chosen as a representative user for our user scenarios based on extensive user research and persona development. Through our research process, we identified Susan as a middle-aged adult with a keen interest in tarot for self-reflection and personal growth. Her daily tarot ritual made her an ideal user to showcase the versatility and practicality of Nudge Tarot. By incorporating Susan's user journey into our scenarios, we aimed to create relatable and meaningful experiences that resonate with our target audience, ensuring that Nudge Tarot addresses real user needs and preferences.

Every morning, Susan sits at her kitchen table with her first cup of coffee, ready for her daily tarot reading. With Nudge Tarot on her phone, she shuffles her physical tarot deck and pulls three cards, eager to gain insights into her day ahead.

Using Nudge Tarot's intuitive interface, Susan inputs the card information into the app, allowing ChatGPT to generate detailed interpretations for each card. She not only reviews her daily reading but also explores how it relates to her business decisions and financial outlook, adding a practical dimension to her spiritual practice.

Intrigued by patterns and themes, Susan checks for any interesting trends across her past five readings, leveraging Nudge Tarot's longitudinal tracking feature for deeper self-reflection and understanding. This morning ritual not only provides Susan with guidance and clarity but also enhances her overall tarot experience with Nudge Tarot's personalized insights.

AI Imaging Using DALL-E

In developing this digital platform, I collaborated closely with researchers and designers. Our goal was to create effective prompts for AI models that could interpret users' tarot cards in an engaging and insightful manner.

One successful collaboration involved our team working together to refine the prompts used for generating AI images with DALL-E. Researchers provided insights into the symbolic meanings of tarot cards while designers contributed their expertise in visual aesthetics.

For instance, when designing the prompt for the "Wheel of Fortune" card, we combined symbolic elements such as a spinning wheel, symbols of change, and elements of fate. Researchers validated the symbolic accuracy, while the designers ensured the visual elements were captivating. This collaborative effort resulted in visually stunning and contextually meaningful AI-generated tarot images, enhancing the overall user experience on our platform.

Next Steps

Moving forward, the next steps for Nudge Tarot involve the development and refinement of the mobile application to bring our vision to life. This includes translating the user scenarios and design concepts into functional features and interactive elements within the app interface. Our development team will work on creating a seamless user experience, ensuring that users like Susan can easily shuffle and select cards, receive personalized interpretations, and explore insights related to daily guidance, finance, and love.

Additionally, we will focus on implementing key functionalities such as digital card options for users without physical decks, longitudinal tracking of readings for trend analysis, and easy sharing capabilities for users to share their readings with friends and family. The app's UI/UX design will undergo rigorous testing and iteration to optimize usability, accessibility, and overall user satisfaction.

Collaboration between design, development, and testing teams will be crucial during this phase to ensure timely delivery, quality assurance, and alignment with our project goals and user expectations. Regular feedback loops and iteration cycles will be implemented to address any challenges, refine features, and enhance the overall app experience. Our goal is to create a robust and user-centric Nudge Tarot app that empowers users like Susan on their tarot journey towards self-discovery and personal insight.
